Scholarship Opportunity

Eligibility:

2024-2025 High school seniors in Wood County, WV or Washington County, OH who plan to continue their education.

Recognition:

AWARD: $500

The winner will be announced and invited to attend the festival’s opening ceremony on Friday, June 20, 2025, and the winning essay will be displayed at the festival.

Essay Topic:

The Mid-Ohio Valley Multi-Cultural Festival was established to help us all learn about and appreciate various cultures, including our own, whatever culture that may be. If we are exposed to different ways of living, we become more aware of who we are and how we live. So we are asking you to tell a story about culture through essay.

Think about how your life might be different if you were raised in a different culture. Why did you pick the culture you chose?  Think about your own experiences.  If you are like many of us, you may not know a lot on the topic from personal experience, but may have learned from what you may have read, or seen on television or in movies, etc. Making sure to choose a specific culture that is not your own, describe how life might be different from what you have experienced. What might be some of the positive differences? What might be some of the challenges? How do you think you would respond to those challenges? What are some positive ways you can help to support people of different cultures in your community?  Please provide the references for any specific sources that you used.

Essay Rules:

• Student must submit a completed entry form (found below).
• Length: 2-3 typed pages, double-spaced. Student’s name should NOT be on the essay.
• Essays are to be student-written.
• MOVMCF Committee members or their designees will judge. Essays will be judged on the basis of authenticity, self-reflection, clarity, and effective and thoughtful expression, as well as addressing the topic.
